Guest Blogger: Kendra Leigh Castle

Hey everyone! Today I am happy to turn my blog over to author Kendra Leigh Castle! I read her "Wild Highland Magic" book as an ARC a few months ago and loved it! My review for it is coming up in May.

I'll shut up now and let Kendra share her thoughts on werewolves!

~Kendra Leigh Castle...

It’s All About the Werewolves

I guess I’ll just get this out of the way up front: I was totally Team Jacob.

Now, if you know what I’m talking about (and put down those rotten vegetables, Team Edward!), you’ve been through the saga of Edward Cullen and Bella Swan. Edward, as I think everyone on Earth now knows, is a hottie vampire madly in love with an unusual human teenage girl. And Jacob…well, he’s her werewolf best friend who kind of fruitlessly pines for her. We won’t talk about what ultimately happens with him. It’s weird. Not bad, just weird. But that doesn’t matter. In fact, the only reason I bring it up is because Jacob, wild and loving, protective and larger than life, is illustrative of why I write what I do.

Yeah. I love me some werewolves.

The third book in my paranormal romance trilogy about a pack of Highland Scottish werewolves, Wild Highland Magic, is about to come out, and I’ve had a great time writing about what I think is the less-appreciated of the two major creatures of the night. I’ll grant you, I love a good vampire story as much as anyone. I mean, what’s not to like?
They’re pale, beautiful, incredibly strong specters who ooze dark romance and sex appeal. But something about werewolves, the rough and earthy shapeshifters as much animal as man, drew me to choose them as my heroes (and now, heroine).

My first two heroes, Gideon and Gabriel MacInnes, are big, dark-haired Scotsmen with golden eyes and killer smiles. They have a strong sense of family/pack loyalty, and are sometimes more comfortable in their furrier skins than their human ones. They embrace what they are, and that ease with themselves is, to me, very sexy. Also, they’re not afraid to let their wilder side take over when the situation meritsJ This time around, though, I had a heroine who wasn’t as comfortable with her animal nature.

Catriona MacInnes has always felt like a freak of nature. With a mother who’s a witch and a father who’s a werewolf, she would have felt odd enough, but her father has always insisted that he was orphaned and knows nothing of his family, which only adds to her sense of otherness. However, when her father takes ill and starts acting strangely, he finally reveals the truth: he’s the brother of the leader of a large pack of Highland werewolves. And for whatever reason, he’s decided that it’s finally time to return to his home, and to take his girls with him to experience the annual pack gathering. It’s an eye-opening experience for Cat, not having anyone bat an eye at her in whichever form she chooses, and openly enjoying being werewolves. She’s untrained, but strong, and when Cat meets a mysterious stranger staying on the grounds, all of the heightened senses she’s spent her life trying to suppress kick in. Werewolves know what they want when they want it, and it was great fun bringing Cat into the MacInnes pack with a bang. She has a lot more in common with her cousins than she at first realizes (an enormous stubborn streak, among other things), and Cat’s earthy, sensual nature comes out in full force whenever she’s around Bastian an Morgaine, an otherworld sorcerer with some major problems of his own. Otherworld, you ask? Yes, my werewolves are also the guardians of the Stone of Destiny, a relic that acts as a door to the realm of Coracin, where their people originally came from. That place is full of blood-drinking demigoddesses, shapeshifting dragons, monstrous daemon, and lots of other interesting creatures…as well as dark magic that can haunt a man until his death, if he doesn’t learn how to defeat it.

I’ll always have a place in my heart for the vampires…in fact, Bastian has to drink blood to maintain his power, though he’s not technically a vampire…but I’ve really enjoyed playing with the big, powerful, sexy, and yes, sometimes furry MacInneses these last couple of years. Putting a feminine spin on my take on the werewolf legend this time around was a great way to cap off the trilogy.

Thanks so much for having me here today! Hope you’ll check out Wild Highland Magic, as well as the other books in the MacInnes Werewolves trilogy (Call of the Highland Moon and Dark Highland Fire). I’ll be around to chat all day, so please pop in and say hi! I’ll also be giving away a copy of Wild Highland Magic to one lucky commenter chosen at random, and will announce the winner in the comments section tomorrow morning. So tell me, what’s your preference? Weres or vamps?

-Kendra

Given the choice between a wolf and a vamp, I'd take the wolf. Vampires are just too DEAD, you know?
The book sounds fabulous! Congrats on the new release!

Hi Kendra,
Glad to catch you here today with MS.Moonlights friends. I loved your hot WereWolves men. I loved the first two books in this trilogy so much, especially "Dark Highland Fire" All that Sexy Biting really turned me on. Your writing and your characters are so strong and interesting.
And you add that Snarky humor that just put that Kendra spin to it and making a great book. I can hardly can wait for this next book and catch up again with that Bastian. This book should prove to be a great wild finale to this trilogy. This makes me sad. I felt so attached to those hunky Scottish werewolves.
Have a Great Day. You're the Best!!! HOWL!!!!!!

Hi, MsM & Kendra! What a GREAT post!! I really enjoyed hearing about your series.

The line that has me sold: "Gideon and Gabriel MacInnes, are big, dark-haired Scotsmen with golden eyes and killer smiles"

Yup, sold. I'm heading over to read a bit more about the books.

BTW, although I liked the idea of Bella & Edward I was so Team Jacob!!

I like both werewolves and vampires, but I do tend to read more stories dealing with werewolves than vampires.
The Maclnnes Werewolves trilogy sounds really good. I am going to have to get them.

Morning, everyone! And Ms. Moonlight, thanks AGAIN for having me over to hang out:-)

Cheryl, vamps aren't too dead for me, but I do prefer someone a little more hot-blooded! Thanks for the congrats!

And oh my, I see Ms. Moonlight has the New Moon posters already up right below! Edward's poster rocks...and that wolf pack, honestly...loving the guy on the far left. Maybe it's the tattoo. Or those external obliques (Cheryl and Donna know well my interest in that particular muscle group, lol)

Kendra Leigh Castle said...

Hi E.H.! Glad you enjoyed the first two, and the way I blended fantasy in with the werewolf lore. It was a lot of fun throwing in more than one supernatural creature! And I agree, I'm a sucker for chifters, of all stripes really, though I do love the wolves particularly. Hope you enjoy the new book!

Awesome post and introduction to your stories.

I have to admit, I'm pretty partial to werewolves myself in paranormal reading. lol (Although I do like vamps too - lol)

Thank you so much for stopping by Ms. M's.

Best Regards
L

Hi Lea! Yeah, you'll never hear me actually complaining about the vamps...I have blood-drinkers in my stories, and I love them too! Plus, I spent my tween years obsessed with David from Lost Boys:-) Thanks for coming by!

Hi Kendra and Ms.M!

I have your first book, Call of the Highland Moon. I really need to read it.

So today I was at the bookstore getting my new releases and the checkout guy said romances were buy 4 get on free. I didn't know since there were no signs. I had four already. I was doing a quick browse and thought of your second book and was thrilled to see one copy! So now I have both of them and will pick up the third when it releases next month!

I much prefer weres over vampires :).

WOW, great post ladies!!

I'm such a hussy for werewolves and the whole thing about your wolves being Scottish, Kendra, has me droling!!

I'm hooked. These books are going to be in my hands ASAP!!

Oh, and I'm totally Team Jacob.

I prefer vampires but also enjoy werewolves, as the Paranormal is my favorite genre to read. I was also team Jacob, I'm always looking for new authors to read. Your series sounds like my kind of read.

Randi said...

I would have to say Vampires. That is only because I haven't read a lot of Werewolf stories. I did just order Wild Highland Magic and Dark Highland Fire. Can't wait to read them!

Hi, Kendra!

I'm glad to see other readers who are Team Jacob like me! I do like vampires, but they are what they are: chilly & undead! Edward doesn't do much for me (too controlling/possessive, always pinching the bridge of his nose in anger!). Jacob, however, is tall, dark & ruggedly handsome (and warm!). Have you seen the photos of the wolf pack actors for the New Moon movie? Wow!!!

I'm looking forward to reading Wild Highland Magic...please don't put me in the book contest though. I already won a copy from your last blog contest!

Thanks,

Diana =)

Kendra Leigh Castle said...

Hi VFG! Love your name:-) Hope you like the books, and LOL on being a vamp/were hussy. I think I'm just a nightcrawler hussy in general!

Hi tetewa, nice to meet you:-) I'm in awe of the Jacob love around here! Agreed, paranormal romance rules...not that I'm biased or anything!

Randi, I hope you enjoy my big sexy Scottish werewolves! I really don't think there are quite as many weres as vamps out there in books, though that has been changing.

Hi Diana! Glad to see you here! I had less of an issue with Edward than I did with Bella, actually...he was controlling, but she was pretty willfully controlled. And poor Jacob! *sniffle* I'm with you on the wolf pack. YUM!

Kara said...

I was lucky enough to be able to review the first two books for Sourcebooks - they were fantastic. I can't wait to read the third one!!

Definitely werewovles!! Although I do like vamps that can shape shift into wolves. There is just something so elemental and alpha about werewolves.

Kendra Leigh Castle said...

Thanks, Kara!! I hope you like it:-) Love your wolf picture, btw. Hmm, for a lot of people, a vamp that can shift to a wolf would be the best of both worlds!

My Blog 2.0 (Dottie) said...

Hi Kendra! (and Ms Moonlight)

To choose between vamps and weres... hmmm... hard decision to make since I enjoy both so much. My first love in paranormal romance was vamps, but weres have been making great strides into urban fantasy, and I love them as well. My ideal book has both, most ideal theme is hero/heroine combination of weres/vamps together, both sexy and secreting all those lovely pheromones.

Dottie :)

Kendra Leigh Castle said...

Hi Dottie! Oh, yeah, I couldn't agree more...bring on the pheromones!:-) One of the reasons introducing different fantasy characters to mate with my weres has been so much fun. Thanks for coming by!

sarabelle said...

I am so picking the WEREs. Now dont get me wrong I think the vamps are sexy too, but there is just something too animalistic about the weres that just make them irristible. WOuld love to read this book it sounds most delicious.

Kendra Leigh Castle said...

Hi Sarabelle! Yay, another one in the weres column! I totally agree:-)

Kendra Leigh Castle said...

Okay, everyone, with the assistance of my lovely nine-year-old daughter (I snagged her to pick from the hat), we have a winner. And it is...

Thanks again, everyone who came over to chat yesterday. You all were so much fun! And thank you Ms. Moonlight, for the invite. This was great:-) I'm giving away yet another copy of the book today over at http://jennifersrandommusings.
